Two types of swans come to Japan (whooper swan and tundra swan) in winter.
They like to eat sea plants, not too deep calm water of lake which are not covered with ice. They do life in couples. And usually make a herds consist of 10 families. Whopper swan live in the wide area of Russia, while Tundra swan concentrate in Northern Siberia and Alaska. When become too cold they go to the South. And on the way to Honshu island they do a break at Onuma lake. You can see them here again in the middle of march on their back way to the North.
大沼は、稚内に近くある沼です。アイヌ語で「シュプントウ」（ウグイの沼）と呼ばれています。毎年10月の時にロシアのシベリアとアメリカのアラスカから二つの白鳥の種類がここに渡ってきます（オオハクチョウとコハクチョウ）。流れが緩やかで、水草で豊富であり、氷が厚くならない大沼が好きらしい。白鳥は、家族単位で暮らしています。もっと寒くなると、白鳥たちは、10月中旬ぐらい本州に向かいます。また春になると、3月中旬頃に帰り道にまた大沼にきます。
ตอนเหนือของเกาะฮอกไกโด ทะเลสาบโอนุมะ เมื่อเข้าเดือนตุลาคม ที่นี่จะเป็นที่พักระหว่างกลางเดินทางอพยพหนีฤดูหนาวของฝูงห่านของสายพันธุ์ คือ whooper swan and tundra swan ที่มีถิ่นฐานอยู่ที่ตอนเหนือของไซบีเรีย และอลาสก้า ห่านเป็นสัตว์มักจะอยู่กันเป็นคู่ และฝูงหนึ่งจะประกอบไปด้วยอย่างน้องสิบครอบครัว เมื่อเข้าฤดูหนาวที่รัสเซีย และอลาสก้า บรรดาห่านจะพากันอพยพกันไปที่เกาะฮอนชูทางตอนใต้ โดยที่ทะเลสาบโอนุมะจะเป็จุดแวะพักเท่านั้น พอถึงเดือนมีนาคม พวกเรสามารถเจอฝูงห่านได้อีกครั้งในช่วงที่พวกมันเดินทางกลับนั่นเอง
